Andy Sherwin (Director 2013/2014)

Making my Viennese directorial debut in EDG 19’s production of Funny Money, I had a solid upbringing in theatre, having a theatre manager as a father, and I first tread the boards at the tender age of 5. Since then, I’ve directed numerous productions in the UK, and specifically in London. I love everything to do with the theatre, whether that’s acting, directing, stage managing, musical directing…

I think I’ve developed quite a laissez-faire attitude to directing, allowing the actors to develop their own personas. This is due, in part, to my fondness of John Barton of RSC fame. A director can of course suggest, guide and support, but it is the actors themselves, and the group as a whole, who need to define the feel of the play.

I’m extremely excited to be working with the EDG19 theatre group, it’s a welcome relief from spending my time teaching in various establishments in Vienna. Funny Money was only the first production – after its success, many may follow in the future!
